United old boys comment on Welbeck move

Former Red Devils icon David Beckham has admitted he is sad to see Danny Welbeck leave Manchester United to join rivals Arsenal and believes that the Gunners have signed “a very good player.”

Striker Welbeck, who joined Arsenal in the early hours of this morning for £16m, after being granted an extension by the Premier League to complete the move, has been a popular topic of discussion today with fans and players alike.

Beckham, 39, has told the BBC that “Arsenal have a very good, young talented English player.

“To see him leave Manchester United is sad,” said the ex-midfielder, who retired from his playing career in May 2013. “He had been there since he was eight and his heart was in Manchester.

“The biggest bonus for Danny Welbeck is that he is going to a club where he will hopefully, get more starts and playing time.

“When you are a player of his calibre and find yourself at United with competition for places, you don’t always get the starts you would like.”

Former Man United player and assistant manager Mike Phelan has slammed his old club for their treatment of Welbeck after the club signed AS Monaco forward Radamel Falcao on loan.

“They have probably lost the way of Manchester United a little bit” said 51-year old.

“Someone like Danny Welbeck has been part of United’s identity and that has been broken, rather than produce their own it may be the case of where are they buying from.

“What will happen in the future now, nobody knows but that thread has been broken.”

Welbeck is currently training with the England squad ahead of their friendly with Norway tomorrow night. This game precedes the country’s opening Euro 2016 qualifying match with Switzerland, next Monday.
