Southampton are poised to confirm the completion of a season-long loan deal that has been agreed with Spanish La Liga champions Atletico Madrid for defender Toby Alderweireld.

Alderweireld, who plays for the Belgium national team, is currently undergoing his medical with the south coasters and is set to be one of a potential three new players to be unveiled by the Saints prior to the closure of the summer transfer window tonight.

Southampton boss Ronald Koeman revealed his last minute player shopping spree by informing Dutch media outlet Helden Online that he wishes to further-bolster his side in attacking and defensive positions in the wake of the exodus of key players in the last two months.

“Toby Alderweireld will undergo a medical today. Hopefully we can also add another attacker. I can’t say who we are working on,” said the Dutch coach.

“I am still looking to bring in two more players, an attacker and a defender.”

Alderweireld, 25, joined Atletico Madrid in 2013 and has been tipped as a likely player to leave the Spanish capitol after just one season. Since the start of the new campaign, he has been left on the bench for all of Atletico’s early fixtures.

The Saints are understood to have fended off stiff competition from rival Premier League clubs including Liverpool, Arsenal and Newcastle along with a number of European sides, to acquire the signature of the Belgian.
