Chelsea midfielder Marco Van Ginkel is understood to have headed over join AC Milan on loan, with reports stating he arrived in the Italian city last night.

The Netherlands international had previously told the Italian club that he wanted to stay at Chelsea and fight for his place but with appearances this season looking like they will be sparse owing to stiff competition in the Blues midfield, he is believed to have changed his mind.

The London club were considering loaning the midfielder elsewhere as he needs game time after suffering a cruciate ligament injury last year and being sidelined for the most-part of the season.

A club statement released from the San Siro confirmed the signing last night: “MILAN – Dutch midfielder Marco Van Ginkel arrived at the Milan-Linate Airport at 22.40 local time.”

Although no other details were confirmed, it has been identified by sources in Italy as a season-long loan.

Van Ginkel joined Chelsea from Vitesse in 2013 for an estimated £8m, but only made four appearances before suffering the injury in a League Cup match against Swindon Town.

The 21-year-old will join his former Blues team mate Fernando Torres, who completed a two-year loan deal with Milan at the weekend.
