Kagawa makes Dortmund return

Manchester United attacking midfielder Shinji Kagawa has completed a £6.4m move back to his former club Borussia Dortmund, with the Bundesliga side having made the announcement of the two-year deal official this afternoon.

The 25-year-old Japan international joined the Red Devils in 2012 under former coach Sir Alex Ferguson. Although he appeared to find his feet during his debut season, Kagawa struggled to fit into the side during the club’s 2013/2014 campaign under David Moyes, having made just 18 Premier League appearances out of a total 38, of which 14 were starts.

Under new boss Louis van Gaal, in the opening fixtures of the new season, Kagawa has been used just once out of a possible four matches – their League Cup 4-0 defeat to MK Dons. He was used in a holding midfield role, which is not his preferred position.

As a result, the Japanese star has been one of the players highly tipped to make a last-minute exit from Old Trafford in the dying moments of the summer football transfer window, which draws to a close tomorrow.

Borussia Dortmund is the club with whom Kagawa made his name as a player when he signed in 2010. The former fans’ favourite had spent two years with the German club and will no doubt be welcomed back with open arms by the Dortmund supporters on his reunion with old boss Jurgen Klopp.
