Mexico had two goals disallowed before finally scoring to beat Cameroon 1-0 in their World Cup opener at the Estadio das Dunas on Friday evening.

Former Tottenham Hotspur Giovanni dos Santos had twice been denied by some strange officiating who disallowed two goals, before Oribe Peralta gave them the lead with a deserved tap in on the hour mark.

Cameroon had come close in the first half through Samuel Eto’o after some neat work from Benoit Assou-Ekotto but they left it until late in the game before they changed their approach, taking off Barcelona’s Alex Song for Pierre Webo, but he failed to provide anything other than an extra man up front for the African side.

Mexico’s win means they now join hosts Brazil at the top of Group A, who beat Croatia on the opening night thanks to goals from Neymar (2) and Oscar, which cancelled out a Marcelo own goal.
