Man United captaincy should go to Evans – ex Red Devil

Evans-vs-Wolves

Since the departure of Nemanja Vidic has left Man United skipper-less, the armband should go to Johnny Evans as a centre-back always makes the best captain, according to ex-Red Devil Clayton Blackmore.

Following captain and central defender Vidic’s exit from Old Trafford last month, the new recipient of the armband remains yet to be confirmed.

Reports have suggested Wayne Rooney and Robin van Persie are both in the running, but in the eyes of former United defender Clayton Blackmore, the most sensible option would be to appoint centre-back Johnny Evans as first team captain.

Evans, 26, arrived at Man United as a youth academy player in 2004 and left to in 2006 complete loan spells at Antwerp and Sunderland. He re-joined the Red Devils in 2008, played mainly as a substitute for Vidic or Ferdinand, and saw much of last season side-lined owing to injury.

Blackmore is also a product of the club’s youth academy and joined 30 years previously in 1974. He enjoyed an eleven year career playing for the Man United first team, often as a defender but sometimes as a midfielder or emergency forward.

In an exclusive interview with Football Express News, Blackmore explained why he believes a central defender is always the best choice of player to captain a team: “If I was in charge I’d make Jonny Evans captain. He is the best centre-half now Vidic and Rio (Ferdinand) have gone.

“It would make sense as centre-halves are better placed to be captains. They can see everything from where they are positioned on the pitch, and get everyone playing better.

“Although I think Jonny would be the best option, it is unlikely,” he added,”I expect the captaincy will go to Van Persie or Wayne.”

The position of Red Devils captain lays completely in the hands of new boss, Dutchman Louis van Gaal, who is currently in Brazil to complete his summer job of managing the Netherlands national team. When van Gaal returns to England after the World Cup, his first task at Old Trafford will be to make his appointment of the captaincy.
