Alexis strike sends Arsenal through to CL group stage

Alexis Sanchez scored the only goal of the tie to send Arsenal through to the Champions League knockout stages over Besiktas.

The North London side started the play-off first leg well and saw the likes of Alex Oxlade Chamberlan and Santi Cazorla both come close, causing Turkish side Besiktas all sorts of problems.

It was English international Wilshere who had the first chance of the game in the ninth minute, having beaten two defenders only to send his effort just wide of Tolga Zengin’s goal.

Moments later and Spanish midfielder Cazorla came close as his effort from long range went just wide.

Besiktas failed to create any clear cut chances, much like their first leg when former Chelsea man Demba Ba came close on several occasions.

And, Arsenal made the visitors pay just before half-time when Alexis Sanchez slid the ball into the back of the net.

The second half would see more chances fall to Arsenal but they failed to build on their lead and were pushed until the final whistle by Slaven Bilic’s side.

And, Mathieu Debuchy’s second booking gave them an even harder task to hold on but Arsene Wenger’s side did and will now go into Thursday’s Champions League group stage draw.
