Wenger backs Giroud for a good season

Arsene Wenger has insisted that striker Olivier Giroud is continuing to improve and that he can go on to score around 25 goals this season.

The French international came off the bench on Saturday to inspire a comeback for his side, scoring the leveller as they drew with Arsenal at Goodison Park.

Giroud, who had been expected to play less this season, mainly down to the arrival of Alexis Sanchez from Barcelona and the return of Joel Campbell form a loan spell; has started the season well and boss Arsene Wenger believes this could be a good season for the Frenchman.

“He scored 16 [in the Premier League last year] and he’s very convincing,” Wenger told the club’s official website. “You never have to set any limitations for any player. For me, he’s improving every year and don’t rule it out that he scores 25.”

Wenger then added his comments on another possible signing before the close of the transfer window later this week.

“We have (Yaya) Sanogo who will be an important asset, we have Giroud, we have Lukas Podolski, we have Joel Campbell who can play centre forward,” he added. “We have Alexis and (Theo) Walcott coming back. Let’s not forget that.

“All of our opponents look for strikers as well and nobody finds a world-class striker available who is better than the strikers you have.”
