De Guzman snubs Swansea and QPR for Napoli

Swansea City v Everton - Barclays Premier League

Villarreal midfielder Jonathan de Guzman has opted for a summer move to Italian Serie A side Napoli where he will work under Spanish coach Rafael Benitez.

The 26-year old was believed to be high on the most-wanted list of Harry Rednapp at west London outfit QPR, but the Dutchman has put pen to paper this afternoon with Benitez in Italy after the successful completion of his medical, signing a 5-year deal worth £5m.

“I am happy to have come to Napoli. I can’t wait to start,” the Dutchman told reporters at the Stadio San Paolo this afternoon.

Netherlands international De Guzman had not played for his parent club Villarreal since 2012 having reportedly struggled to fit into the side under their newly-appointed manager Jose Francisco Molina.

He spent the last two seasons on loan to Swansea, playing under Michael Laudrup during the 2012/2013 run and scoring against QPR on his debut match – a 5-0 away win at Loftus Road.

The midfielder impressed Laudrup’s successor Gary Monk during the 2013/2014 season and Monk was keen to sign the player on a permanent basis this summer, however De Guzman had had enough of life in Wales and saw the Napoli proposal as the more favourable option.
