Rodgers hails defensive pair Lovren and Manquillo

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers has hailed new signings Dejan Lovren and Javier Manquillo after the 2-1 win over Southampton on Sunday.

Daniel Sturridge scored the winning goal as Rodgers’ side grabbed all three points from Southampton on the Premier League’s opening weekend.

New signings Dejan Lovren and Javier Manquillo started the game and were consistently good at keeping the likes of James Ward-Prowse and Graziano Pelle at bay for 90 minutes and Rodgers has taken time to praise the two new Liverpool boys.

“I thought Lovren was excellent,” he told reporters. “It’s always difficult when you play against your old team. I thought he dealt with it really well. He’s a real leader for us. I thought he was excellent.

“And I thought young Manquillo done well, considering he picked up a booking early on. At 19 years of age, I thought he was very, very good.”

Rodgers also added that new left-back Alberto Moreno is close to making his debut for the Merseyside club, whilst Lazar Markovic, signed from Benfica and Adam Lallana are both nursing injuries.

“Thankfully we have got young Moreno coming in as well. He’s a big talent,” the Northern Irishman enthused.

“Markovic [is] now available, which is great and Adam Lallana won’t be too far away in the next few weeks so, all in all, the squad is shaping up very well.”
