David Silva and Sergio Aguero scored the goals as Manchester City beat Newcastle United 2-0 at St. James Park.
Manuel Pellegrini selected a different looking side for the opening game against Alan Pardew’s Newcastle United and bemoaned the early start of English football leading up to kick off.
But, it was his side who gained all three points following a fairly solid performance which will give City means to go on and defend their title.
Edin Dzeko came close with less than three minutes on the clock, but the impressive Tim Krul denied the striker and it remained 0-0.
Seven minutes before the break and City would grab the lead when David Silva finished a quick counter attack which came against the run of play.
The second half saw Newcastle produce some good chances but they failed to put the ball past Joe Hart, who seemed in good form.
Spaniard Ayoze Perez came close to grabbing a leveller late on but his missed chance saw Sergio Aguero go down the other end and put the game beyond doubt with a well taken goal.
