Daniel Sturridge scored the winning goal as Liverpool battled to beat Southampton earlier on Sunday.

The Merseyside club approached the game with Ronald Koeman’s Southampton having signed three players from their opposition in the shape of Rickie Lambert, Adam Lallana and Dejan Lovren.

But they failed to dominate Koeman’s new look side and struggled to create any clear cut chances in the early goings.

That was until Raheem Sterling continued his superb pre-season form into the new Premier League campaign and netted the opener.

Liverpool would enter the break leading but they came out in the second half, struggling to dominate the game and it was a superb leveller from Nathaniel Clyne that got the Southern side back on level terms.

Moments later and it could have been 2-1 to the Saints when Graziano Pelle linked with Steven Davis, but the former Aston Villa man failed to find the back of the net.

And, his miss would be punished by a late winner from Daniel Sturridge, who tapped home following a header from Sterling.
