West Ham are set to make an improved offer for their latest target Conor Wickham after their first bid of £5m was rejected by Sunderland, according to The Express.

The Hammers’ attempt to seal a deal for the 21-year-old striker failed yesterday when the Black Cats turned their initial proposal down.

But, with Sam Allardyce’s outfit very keen to acquire Wickham, they have raised the stakes by another £2m and are poised to slam a revised offer of £7m on the table.

The Sunderland youngster has just one year remaining on his £25,000 a week contract and is believed to be undecided about where he wishes to spend his near future. Should he let his contract expire rather than lock into a deal with West Ham now,  he could leave Teeside on a free transfer next summer.

According to Daily Express sources, the England U21 striker could have his wages increased by 25% if he was to join the London club.

Wickham played an important role in Sunderland’s Premier League survival campaign, scoring seven goals in 14 appearances, after being recalled from loan spells at Sheffield Wednesday and Leeds.

He has been linked to West Ham for a few weeks, with the club looking to resolve the issues they face on the forward-line owing to the latest misfortune of their injury-prone striker Andy Carroll, who is expected to miss the first three months of the new season with an ankle problem.
