Saints continue pursuit of Man United striker

Southampton manager Ronald Koeman is stepping up his chase for Manchester United striker Javier Hernandez, according to The Daily Express.

The Saints had previously hoped to land the striker in a deal including left-back Luke Shaw but with the purchase of Shaw having been pushed through by the Red Devils at the end of the World Cup, an agreement over the Mexican had not been set out.

With the end of the summer transfer window drawing near, talks have now been resumed with Southampton making a last-ditch attempt to secure Hernandez.

The 26-year-old striker joined United from Mexican side Guadalajara in 2010. Despite spending the majority of his time behind leading strikers Robin Van Persie and Wayne Rooney, ‘Chicharito’ has managed 59 goals in 152 appearances.

Southampton have undergone a summer of drastic reorganisation which has seen the exits of fans’ favourites Rickie Lambert, Luke Shaw, Adam Lallana and Dejan Lovren.

Koeman has spent well however, bringing in Graziano Pelle, Dusan Tadic, Ryan Bertrand, Saphir Taider and Fraser Forster. The Dutchman still hopes to land three more players including Hernandez.

“We have targets to replace Lambert, we have targets to replace Lovren,” said Koeman.

“Then the squad will be 24-25 players, then we have real competition in the team to have a good season.”

The south coasters are not looking to make any further player sales and will be pleased that defender Jose Fonte has just penned a new three-year contract, keeping him at the club until 2017.
