Giggs next in line

Manchester United hero Ryan Giggs is tipped as the likely successor of Red Devils boss Louis van Gaal, by former Red Devil Clayton Blackmore.

Giggs, 40, took charge of a United side in turmoil when former coach David Moyes was given his marching orders in April following a disastrous Premier League season and 7th place Premier League finish, behind Tottenham Hotspur.

It was United’s most unsuccessful league season in 14 years. Prior to the 2013/2014 season the Red Devils had not finished lower than third since 1990, when they finished 13th in 1990 in the old First Division under Alex Ferguson.

Man United instated Giggs as an interim coach but did not intend to contract him on a permanent basis for the position, instead, appointing Dutchman Louis van Gaal, who has formerly managed the Netherlands national team along with European giants Barcelona and Bayern Munich.

Blackmore, who joined the club’s youth academy in 1974 and played in the first team from 1983 to 1994, has given van Gaal his seal of approval and anticipates significant improvement of the team performance next season under him.

He told Football Express News: “They have van Gaal, who is a top manager and I’m looking forward to seeing improvements at the club next season with him in charge.”

Blackmore said Giggs, who has since been appointed the position of assistant coach working alongside van Gaal, could be the Dutchman’s natural successor in a few years’ time.

“I don’t know if its just paper talk, but it looks like Giggs might be in line to take charge in three or four years, and I think he could be the right man to take them forward in the future.”
