Brazil defender hopes to heal World Cup woes in Paris

Chelsea’s expensive Brazilian reject David Luiz believes the only way to cure his World Cup woes is to throw himself into the upcoming season with his new club Paris Saint-Germain.

The 27-year-old has experienced an eventful summer.  First the World Cup debacle, which saw his national team and host side Brazil demolished 7-1 by Germany in the semi-finals then suffer a 3-0 stuffing by Netherlands in the third-place play-offs.

Then on his arrival back in the UK the centre-back switched clubs, moving from Premier League giants Chelsea to French Ligue 1 heavyweights PSG – where he is due to spend the next five years.

This afternoon, Luiz spoke out about the storm he has weathered following Brazil’s World Cup shambolic campaign: “The first days after the World Cup were very difficult” he told reporters at his official unveiling in Paris.

“That’s why football is so nice. It gives us the opportunity to react quickly and learn a lot from a situation, what were our mistakes and where things went wrong.

“We wouldn’t be having this conversation if Brazil had lost in the quarter-finals.

“We haven’t played well in two games, but we had some good games before. It happens in football.”

With Brazil 2014 being a World Cup Luiz will surely hope to forget, he is now looking to the upcoming season and said he will throw himself into club football, assuring PSG fans he is working hard to regain his fitness following a period of leave last month.

“I want to be on the pitch as soon as possible. I hope to be 100 percent fit for next week.

“I’m looking forward to playing my first match for Paris.”

The former Chelsea man received much media criticism over his uninspiring performances in Brazil and as a result, Blues supporters were delighted by the news their club had negotiated the mega-money deal that saw the Brazilian bundled out of the door and on a plane to Paris.

They believe the £48m Chelsea received for Luiz was a mind-boggling fee for such a player, and that PSG will likely be left feeling rather short-changed should he carry forth his lacklustre performances of the World Cup into the Ligue 1 run, which kicks off tomorrow.
