Liverpool legend slams retiring referee Webb

Former Liverpool striker John Aldridge has revealed his delight at referee Howard Webb’s decision to retire.

The Yorkshireman, considered by many to be the best official in England, last appeared at this summer’s World Cup in Brazil but has decided not to continue next term.

He has now been appointed technical director of Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) and will oversee the technical methods and guidelines for match officials.

Ex-Republic of Ireland international Aldridge has made no secret of his dislike for Webb. Earlier this year he vented his anger on Twitter following the 43-year-old’s performance in Liverpool’s 2-1 FA Cup loss at Arsenal.

Striker Luis Suarez was denied what appeared to be a certain penalty after being felled by midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, while the referee could also have shown the visitors’ captain, Steven Gerrard, a second yellow card.

Webb avoided demotion in the immediate aftermath of the contest, but was overlooked for the Merseyside giants’ trip to rivals Manchester United.

Aldridge hailed the news of the referee’s retirement and said on Twitter: “Great news folks we won’t be webbed again. He’s retired. Happy days.”

Webb oversaw 500 Premier League and Football League matches and the 2010 World Cup final between Spain and Holland.
