Higuain: Messi failed to tempt me to join Barcelona

Napoli striker Gonzalo Higuain has discussed reports linking him with a move to Barcelona this summer.

Whilst Barcelona officials firmly had their sights set on signing Luis Suarez from Liverpool this summer, reports in both Spanish and Italian press linked former Real Madrid striker Gonzalo Higuain with a move to the Camp Nou.

Further reports claimed that compatriot Lionel Messi was trying to tempt the Argentine striker into the move whilst on international duty at the World Cup this summer.

Messi did claim that it would be a delight to play alongside the Napoli forward at Barca, but Higuain has insisted that the four-time Ballon d’Or winner failed to tempt him.

“Did I want to go to Barcelona? I always told the truth and that is that I wanted to think only of the World Cup and then I would return to Napoli,” the striker told La Gazzetta dello Sport.

“So I kept quiet and I had nothing to fear, because there was nothing to comment about.

“Messi said certain things and I can only be flattered by them. I believe that every player would love to play alongside a great champion like him, but that does not mean that I ever wanted to leave.

“But if Messi came to Napoli, that would be great.”
