Arsenal legend: We did not need Fabregas

Fabregas

Arsenal stalwart Lee Dixon claims the Gunners did not need to re-sign Cesc Fabregas from Barcelona and urged fans to “move on” following the Spaniard’s switch to Chelsea.

The 27-year-old, who spent eight years in north London before rejoining boyhood side Barca in 2011, was deemed surplus to requirements at the Nou Camp and told to find a new club during the summer transfer window.

Arsenal had first option on his signature as part of the deal that was struck three years ago, but they opted against purchasing their ex-captain, paving the way for a move to the Blues.

Former England international Dixon, now a television pundit, played for the club between 1988 and 2002.

He admitted to being a big fan of Fabregas during the midfielder when he flourished into a world class talent under the watchful eye of boss Arsene Wenger, but feels his old mentor made the right decision by not going back in for the player.

Dixon also hinted that his best days could be behind him and Chelsea may have bought a man who has already peaked.

He said on Twitter: “I loved Fabregas. I feel we had the best of him. We don’t need another midfielder like him.

“Good player but the priority is elsewhere. Move on.”
