West Ham boss: Carroll is miserable

West Ham’s injury-prone striker Andy Carroll is ‘miserable’ after receiving surgical treatment for his latest injury along with a load of abuse on social media, according to Hammers boss Sam Allardyce.

The 25-year-old forward has undergone specialist treatment in the United States including an operation to fix damage he sustained to his ankle during West Ham’s pre-season tour of New Zealand.

He is currently recuperating wearing a post-surgery boot and feeling very miserable over the implications of his latest misfortune.

With the outlook for the first half of the season very bleak and faced with the prospect of not being able to train to regain his fitness until December at the earliest, it is no surprise Carroll is down-in-the-mouth.

Hammers coach Allardyce has voiced his sympathy, drawing attention to the fact Carroll has had more than his fair share of bad luck where injuries are concerned.

He told reporters: “He is pretty miserable. He is not very happy with life at the moment because it is a massive blow to him again. We just have to pick his spirits up.

“Hopefully when the boot comes off and the specialist gives him the okay to start working again he will feel a lot happier with himself.

“But he is certainly very upset and very miserable at this moment in time.”

Carroll cost the Hammers £15m in May 2013 and has not been able to give the Upton Park faithful his all since signing his 6-year contract. He made just 16 appearances for the club during their 2013/2014 Premier League run, having spent much of the season absent with a heel problem.

To make matters worse for the Geordie frontman, some of the club supporters have turned against him and subjected him to angry attacks on social media platform Twitter.

One user tweeted: “Fed up this bloke has taken no care of himself”.

Another said: “They should put you down”.

Carroll is hoping he will bounce back from this latest misdemeanour and win over the fans with strong fitness and form on his return, but his mission will likely be a lengthy uphill climb.
