United star van Persie lifts lid on return

Manchester United striker Robin van Persie has revealed that he returned to training today and is ready to put the disappointment of last season behind him.

The former Arsenal hitman is back from an extended holiday which was pencilled in after he helped Holland reach the semi-finals of the World Cup.

He is the hot favourite to be named captain by new boss and compatriot Louis van Gaal, who in charge of the Netherlands during this summer’s tournament in Brazil.

Van Persie took to social media site Twitter to share his delight at being back at work and said: “Back in training today after a short break.

“Looking forward to the new season so much!! Hope you are all feeling the same.”

Last season van Persie was forced to dismiss rumours of a fall-out with then-manager David Moyes, amid talk of a difference of opinion over training methods.

The Scot was dismissed in April after the Red Devils dropped to seventh place in the Premier League table, which is where they finished the campaign.

They also failed to win a piece of silverware, and ex-Barcelona and Bayern Munich chief van Gaal has been drafted in to spark an upturn in fortunes at Old Trafford.
