United move for teen striker

Ogo Obi

Manchester United are on the verge of signing Watford youngster Ogo Obi following his successful two week loan spell on tour with the Red Devils’ youth academy team.

The 16-year-old striker impressed Red Devils management with his performances in the youth’s pre-season tour in Northern Ireland, netting two goals against Australian juniors Gold Coast Academy in the Milk Cup tournament.

Both goals came in the first 20 minutes of the game and the Manchester teens totally dominated the Australians, delivering a painful 11-0 thrashing.

Obi, who has been training with Championship side Watford, is not under written contract with the Hornets but has been offered a one-year deal.

The London-based club granted him permission to train with the Manchester giants for two weeks last month and the original loan spell has been extended, with United reportedly keen to sign the young striker on a permanent basis.

Should he join the Red Devils youth academy, Obi would not only benefit from the golden opportunity of progression within one of the Premier League’s top sides, but he would also exercise a £130,000 compensation fee to be paid to Watford.

The teenager has been demonstrating his star potential for a year or more now, having shone in the Milk Cup youth tournament last term too.  He scored ten goals and received the honour of the Golden Boot award, which hailed him as the best player in the competition.
