United legend backs van Gaal’s straight-talking approach

Manchester United legend Paul Scholes backs Red Devils boss Louis van Gaal’s straight-talking approach with his players and is of the view ‘if the lads don’t like it, then tough.’

It appears United’s new coach has already ruffled a few feathers in the dressing room since his arrival at Old Trafford just a fortnight ago.

At the weekend it was widely reported that the Dutchman had passed some brutally honest comments about the fitness levels of 19-year-old left-back Luke Shaw, who signed to the Manchester giants last month from Southampton.

The youngster, who cost United a staggering £30m, was told his fitness were not up to scratch and that he would have to train alone in order to get up to speed with the rest of the squad prior to the start of the new season.

Ex-United midfielder Scholes sees no issue with van Gaal’s no-nonsense approach and says the players will always know where they stand under a manager who shows no mercy if they don’t tow the line and, as young Shaw has learnt, the Dutchman is not afraid to voice his opinions publicly.

“If they don’t like it then tough,” said the 39-year-old.

“I think it’s the best way to be when a player knows where they stand it’s always better than being a bit unsure.

“Does the manager like me or does he not like me? It seems with this man you’ll know either way, and that can only be a good thing.”
