Southampton have beaten Liverpool at the last minute to the loan signing of Ryan Bertrand from Chelsea.
The London born defender has struggled to force his way into Chelsea’s first team and was loaned to Aston Villa last season, making 10 appearances in the Midlands.
The signing of Brazilian Filipe Luis at Stamford Bridge has once again seen the 24-year-old’s chances of becoming a regular under Jose Mourinho fade and it was understood that Bertrand was set to join Liverpool.
However, Southampton, who have seen a significant number of first team players leave this summer, produced a last minute bid to Chelsea for the defender.
The Saints had been searching for a new left-back after losing Luke Shaw to Manchester United and the young Englishman will now move to St Marys until the end of the season.
