United target encouraged to request transfer

Barcelona are reportedly waiting for Fiorentina winger Juan Cuadrado to request a transfer in order to force a move to the Nou Camp.

According to TuttoSport, the La Liga heavyweights are desperate to land the Manchester United target but believe the saga will drag on unless the player makes his feelings clear to the Viola.

However, the report claims that sources close to the player have revealed he is unwilling to ruin his relationship with Fiorentina by handing in a transfer request.

Barca have been chasing him since last month without success, and Spanish publication Mundo Deportivo claims United are a genuine threat to their hopes of signing the wideman, with boss Louis van Gaal keen to strengthen down the flanks.

The Dutchman is looking to reshape his squad ahead of the 2014-15 campaign, having been left unimpressed by some of his players during the pre-season tour of the USA.

He is said to have been impressed by Cuadrado’s performances for Colombia in the World Cup – a competition in which van Gaal led the Netherlands to a third-place finish.

The 62-year-old is prepared to freshen up his options in the wide positions, with doubts surrounding the Old Trafford futures of Nani, Ashley Young and Wilfried Zaha.

Fiorentina will hold out for somewhere in the region of £33million after increasing his asking price in the light of his performances in Brazil.

Cuadrado scored 13 goals in 38 appearances for his club last term while also receiving 12 yellow cards and one red.
