West Ham chairman explains Allardyce Twitter gaffe

West Ham United co-chairman David Gold claims he “accidentally” endorsed a supporter’s tweet calling for the dismissal of manager Sam Allardyce.

The veteran entrepreneur took to social media site Twitter to clarify his stance after his decision to ‘favourite’ the Hammers fan’s message was highlighted online and soon went viral.

When one of his followers tweeted Gold the message: “Is today the day we get rid of BFS (Allardyce)? Fingers crossed,” the 77-year-old opted to favourite it.

However, he insists it was an honest mistake caused by jetlag on the way back from the pre-season tour of New Zealand, and said nothing should be read into it or expect the axe to suddenly fall on the boss.

He said: “After a 33-hour flight from New Zealand, I was in my car scanning through my tweets and it seems I accidentally favourited one

“It has made some of the papers today so I should clarify that I did not and would never deliberately or intentionally endorse a tweet that questions our manager’s position.

“Lesson: don’t use Twitter when you’re jet lagged!”

Allardyce’s position at the helm remains under scrutiny following an inconsistent 2013-14 campaign which saw his side flirt with relegation at the turn of the year, yet also reach the League Cup semi-finals.
