Redknapp speaks out on Liverpool U-turn

Queens Park Rangers boss Harry Redknapp has admitted that he is astonished by Liverpool’s claim that they pulled out of the deal to sign striker Loic Remy because of a problem with his medical.

Remy was all set for a move to Brendan Rodgers’ Reds at the weekend, with the £8.5million fee and a £90,000 a week salary agreed.

The transfer was subject to the French forward successfully passing his physical examination but the Merseyside giants have backed out on the basis they could not give the player a 100% clean bill of health.

Redknapp is flabbergasted and told reporters: “I don’t really see how he could have failed a medical.

“He had a stringent medical here. One at Marseille, one at Newcastle and one with the French team at the World Cup.

“He’s never had a problem with his fitness, you couldn’t meet a fitter lad.

“I’ve seen the story break but I don’t know how there can be an issue with his fitness. He’s got no problems whatsoever.”

Remy signed for QPR in January 2013 and was loaned to Newcastle last August for the 2013/2014 season.

Prior to that he was playing in France and is believed to have experienced problems with a medical exam when he moved from Nice to Marseilles in 2010. A heart defect had showed up on tests but was not deemed not a major issue so Marseille continued in their plans to sign the striker.

Redknapp believes there is another reason why Liverpool have abandoned their mission to take Remy to Anfield, but is delighted he will now stay at Loftus Road as he believes he has a fantastic hitman at his disposal.

“There must have been a breakdown or they’ve changed their mind or they’ve decided to move in another direction,” he added.

“It’s not fair on him because it’s my opinion and the opinion of everybody else, he’s never had a problem before.

“Liverpool’s loss is our gain. I’m disappointed for the boy that his move didn’t happen but from a selfish point of view, I’ve got a great striker back here now.”
