Spurs legend: Arsenal deal for Chambers is ridiculous

Tottenham Hotspur icon Gary Lineker has described bitter rivals Arsenal’s purchase of defender Calum Chambers from Southampton as “ridiculous”.

The ex-England striker revealed that he sympathises with supporters of the south coast outfit, who have sold a host of leading players during the summer transfer window.

Captain Adam Lallana, targetman Rickie Lambert and centre-half Dejan Lovren have all joined Liverpool, while full-back Luke Shaw is now a Manchester United player.

Chambers is the latest man to head for the exit door and Saints midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin could yet follow him to north London, according to sources close to the Emirates Stadium.

Lineker said on Twitter: “Arsenal have completed the signing of Calum Chambers from, you’ve guessed it, Southampton.

“Really feel for Saints fans. This is ridiculous!”

England under-19 international Chambers has headed to the Gunners’ training camp in Austria, having successfully come through a medical on Friday.

He has made 25 senior appearances for Southampton and offers flexibility as he can operate at full-back, centre-half or in midfield.

Boss Arsene Wenger is not expected to farm him out on loan despite his lack of experience.

He is the club’s fourth summer signing following the acquisition of attacker Alexis Sanchez, defender Mathieu Debuchy and goalkeeper David Ospina.
