Wenger admits signing Chambers is a ‘gamble’

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has discussed his upcoming move for Calum Chambers as a ‘gamble’.

As we revealed last week, Chambers is set to arrive at the Emirates stadium in a deal worth £16m from Southampton and will link up with his new team-mates in the coming days.

The youngster will join the likes of David Ospina, Mathieu Debuchy and Alexis Sanchez, who all arrived at the Gunners this summer.

But, despite his happiness at closing a deal for Chambers, boss Arsene Wenger has admitted that is is a ‘gamble’.

“He can play at centre-back, right-back and central midfield,” the French boss told reporters.

“I hope he will give us competition for the players in these three positions.

“He hasn’t played many games, no, but the English players on the market in England are very expensive and at the end of the day I was ready to take a gamble because he is a player for the future.”
