Vertonghen delighted with Barcelona interest

Tottenham Hotspur defender Jan Vertonghen has spoken of his delight at being linked with a move to Barcelona.

The Belgian defender has been strongly linked with a move to the Catalan giants this summer, with some reports in Spanish media stating that a four-year contract had been agreed in principle.

A move has since silenced in recent weeks with Barca boss Luis Enrique taking a closer look at other transfer targets, such as Jeremy Mathieu, who completed his move to Camp Nou last week.

However, that has not stopped Vertonghen from speaking about the links and issuing his delight at being discussed by Barca officials.

“It’s certainly flattering when a big club like Barcelona show an interest in signing you,” Vertonghen told Sporza.

“It’s confirmation that you are on the right track.”

Vertonghen, who joined Spurs from Ajax in 2012 then rubbished reports that a deal had been agreed.

“They say ‘when there’s smoke, there’s fire’, but there’s no fire for now.”
