Benitez eyes France midfielder

Cabella

Napoli manager Rafael Benitez has reportedly set his sights on snapping up Montpellier midfielder Remy Cabella.

Italian publication Il Mattino claims the ex-Liverpool boss is determined to bolster his squad and add to his options in the centre of the pitch in order to take the pressure off talisman Marek Hamsik.

Benitez seemingly feels he is in with a chance of landing his man in a deal worth somewhere in the region of £8million, although he may have to wait until the end of the World Cup.

The 24-year-old has been called up to the France squad in place of injured playmaker Clement Grenier, although Napoli could enter into a dialogue with the player’s representatives during the tournament in Brazil, which gets under way tonight.

According to the report, Benitez has a number of alternative options in mind in case the Serie A outfit fail to lure Cabella to Italy.

He was an ever-present last season for Montpellier, who finished the 2013-14 Ligue 1 campaign in 15th position.

Cabella got his name on the scoresheet 14 times in 37 appearances – an impressive return for a player operating at the heart of the midfield engine room.

He has two years left on his contract in his homeland.
