United plan medical for Roma midfielder Strootman

Manchester United will insist upon a rigorous medical if they reach an agreement with Roma for the transfer of midfielder Kevin Strootman, Football Express News understands.

A source close to Old Trafford told FEN boss Louis van Gaal has expressed an interest in luring his fellow countryman to the Premier League, but the club will leave no stone unturned in medical tests on the player.

He missed the second half of last season with an anterior cruciate ligament injury and is still in the process of finishing his rehabilitation work.

The Red Devils are weighing up an offer for the 24-year-old and if terms are agreed with their Serie A counterparts, they will then seek to ascertain whether he is on track to return to the same kind of level at which he operated before being sidelined.

He would have been a certain starter for van Gaal’s Holland side in this summer’s World Cup had he been fit and available for selection.

His fine early-season form played a big part in firing Roma to the top of the Serie A table, only to see them eventually overhauled by Juventus later on in the campaign.

Strootman still has four years remaining on his contract in the Italian capital, meaning United must pay big money to secure his services.

They must also convince the player to turn his back on Champions League football.
