United striker flies to Portugal for transfer talks

Manchester United outcast Bebe is on the brink of quitting the club permanently for Portugese giants Benfica.

A source close to Old Trafford told Football Express News the Red Devils have been actively looking for buyers after concluding that he would never make the grade.

The attacker, who can operate out wide on the flanks or through the middle as a striker, made what looks like his farewell appearance in Tuesday night’s friendly clash with Southport before being substituted at the interval.

He arrived at the club in a blaze of publicity four summers ago in a £7million switch from Vitória de Guimarães but has been told he is surplus to requirements.

The 24-year-old has failed to start a solitary match in the Premier League throughout his ill-fated career at United and then-manager Sir Alex Ferguson later revealed he approved the deal without having seen him play.

He was not asked to be part of the pre-season trip to the USA and new boss Louis van Gaal is seemingly not interested in offering Bebe a lifeline.

The player has travelled to Portugal for advanced talks with Benfica and is set to undergo a medical with a view to penning a four-year agreement.
