Wenger confirms German trio will miss season opener

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has confirmed that Per Mertersacker, Lukas Podolski and Mesut Ozil will miss the start of the new Premier League season.

The German trio played an important part in their county’s successful World Cup campaign, beating Argentina in the final to capture the trophy in Brazil last month.

And, following their successful win, the players of the national side will return late to their respective clubs, with Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger confirming to reporters that Mertesacker, Podolski and Ozil will miss the start of the season.

“I’ve given them a good break because I’ve experience of players who have been far in the World Cup. You need a rest.

“Will they be ready? I think that Mertesacker certainly because he prepares individually very well. They have a little chance.

“For the first game, I don’t think they will be ready for August 16. They come back beginning on August 11. All three.”

The trio will therefore miss Arsenal’s opening league game against Crystal Palace.
