Barcelona still fancy Arsenal’s Vermaelen

Barcelona will attempt a final move for Arsenal defender Thomas Vermaelen this summer, according to Mundo Deportivo.

The Belgian defender has been linked with a move out of the Emirates stadium this summer after falling behind Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker under boss Arsene Wenger.

And, the former Ajax man has received plenty of interest with Inter Milan, Manchester City and Manchester United all credited.

Many reports had stated that the latter had agreed personal terms with the central defender but a fee with Arsenal was still to be agreed.

And, it is now understood by Catalan daily Mundo Deportivo that Barcelona are ready to pounce.

The La Liga giants announced and presented the signing of Jeremy Mathieu from Valencia on Thursday but their need to bolster their defensive options continues and they believe Vermaelen would be the perfect addition.

New Barca boss Luis Enrique has reportedly given the green light to make the signing, which would cost around the £10m-£15m mark.
