Chelsea plot transfer U-turn with £32m defender raid

Chelsea are reportedly weighing up a big-money bid for Roma defender Mehdi Benatia just days after Blues boss Jose Mourinho ruled out further signings.

The Portugese declared that all his incoming business was done following the acquisition of striker Diego Costa and full-back Filipe Luis from Atletico Madrid, and Barcelona midfield man Cesc Fabregas.

However, Italian source Il Tempo claims the west London outfit have been alerted to the fact that Benatia’s £32million switch to Manchester City is virtually dead in the water, while fellow suitors Liverpool have so far been put off by the asking price.

Premier League champions City expect to secure the services of Porto centre-half Eliaquim Mangala in the coming days, after the Frenchman successfully completed a medical.

Should the deal be completed they will pull out of a move for Benatia, paving the way for Europe’s elite to battle it out for his services.

The report reveals that Roma are still trying to mend their relationship with the Moroccan by attempting to extend his contract, but it is thought that he would prefer a fresh start overseas.

Roma head coach Rudi Garcia does not want to see the 27-year-old depart and said: “For me, things are clear. Mehdi is under contract this season and will be a Roma player.

“Luckily for us, the president often talks with the players.”
