Football Express News understands that Barcelona midfielder Cesc Fabregas had made a last ditch attempt to re-join Arsenal, but he was told ‘no’ by former boss Arsene Wenger.

The Spanish midfielder is currently preparing for the World Cup in Brazil with the Spanish national side but concerns about his future are continuing to burden the Barcelona man.

Fabregas has been firmly linked with a move away from the Camp Nou already this summer after failing to impress since re-joining his boy-hood club from Arsenal in 2011.

Manchester United and Chelsea have been firmly linked with some reports stating that an agreement between Fabregas and the latter had been agreed.

However, it is understood that the 27-year-old midfielder recently made a last ditch attempt to make a move back to Arsenal.

Fabregas spent eight years under the guidance of Arsene Wenger but it is understood that the French boss told his former player that he would not be willing to sacrifice a huge amount of his transfer funds on one player and that a move would be hard to complete.

That leaves Chelsea in pole position to sign the midfielder, who looks set to be replaced by Ivan Rakitic at Barcelona, after the Catalan club agreed a fee with Europa League champions Sevilla.
