Napoli goalkeeper sparks doubts over Reina return

Liverpool goalkeeper Pepe Reina’s proposed return to Napoli is under threat after the Serie A club’s shot-stopper Rafael declared he is ready to start the season as first-choice.

Long-serving Reds star Reina was farmed out on loan to the Italians last term after falling out of favour with boss Brendan Rodgers.

He was reunited with former Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez in Naples but talks over a second stint have stalled, with his parent club holding out for a permanent deal and his suitors preferring a loan.

Brazilian goalkeeper Rafael, who missed a chunk of last term through an injury sustained against Swansea City in the Europa League, is now fully fit and told Il Mattino he intends to claim the number one jersey.

He said: “I’m ready for the challenges of this year. I played 11 games last year and the team remained unbeaten with me. And I hope it remains that way for a long time.”

Rafael also heaped praise on Benitez for the support provided by the Spaniard during his spell on the sidelines and gruelling rehabilitation in his homeland.

He added: “His presence has been constant in recent months when I have been in Brazil for the rehabilitation, I was getting close and he has followed my recovery step by step.

“I hope to repay the trust he has had in me.”
