Spurs set to splash £19.7m on Serie A striker

Destro

Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly lining up a big-money raid on Serie A club Roma for the second successive summer.

According to SportMediaset, the north London outfit have entered the race for striker Mattia Destro, who is valued at around £19.7million.

The report claims Spurs face stiff competition from the likes of Inter Milan and Bundesliga side Wolfsburg, although fcinternews believes the San Siro giants could be priced out of entering into a bidding war.

Just 12 months ago Tottenham paid Roma a club record £30m for attacker Erik Lamela, who has so far failed to justify the huge outlay.

Lamela made only nine top-flight appearances and has not featured for Spurs since the 3-0 win against Stoke City on December 29 after suffering a serious back injury.

Technical director Franco Baldini in particular is still anxious to see Lamela thrive in the Premier League, as he recommended him to the board of directors a year ago.

Spurs will hope for better things from Destro if they land him, as the 23-year-old plundered an impressive 13 goals in 20 appearances during the 2013-14 campaign.

He has three years remaining on his contract in the Italian capital and it is thought that Roma are willing to let him go in order to balance the books after buying Hellas Verona’s Juan Iturbe.
