Liverpool defender lifts lid on ‘nightmare’

Manchester United v Liverpool - Capital One Cup Third Round

Liverpool defender Jose Enrique opened up about his return to the first-team fold after being named in the Reds’ squad for today’s pre-season friendly against Preston North End.

The ex-Newcastle United man was last week forced to dismiss rumours that he was struggling to regain his fitness after finally returning from a lengthy spell on the sidelines but this afternoon admitted it has been “a nightmare”.

The Spaniard, who made only nine appearances last season due to a serious knee injury, made his long-awaited return to training with his team-mates last week and was widely-expected to play in the midweek game against Danish outfit Brondby.

However, he did not feature at all for Brendan Rodgers’ side, sparking fresh fears that he had suffered a setback or returned to training too early.

But he played down talk of a setback and today told his followers on social media site Twitter that he was delight to be back.

He said: “On the way now to the game. First game for me after long long time. It’s been a nightmare but finally I’m back and I can’t wait to play again

Enrique will battle with England youngster Jon Flanagan for a place in Rodgers’ side in the 2014-15 season, having seen the academy product thrive in the left-back slot during his absence.
