City defender ready to snub United boss van Gaal

Rekik

Manchester City defender Karim Rekik is ready to reject overtures from rivals United after climbing the Blues’ pecking order, Football Express News understands.

A source close to the Etihad Stadium told FEN new Red Devils boss Louis van Gaal holds a long-term interest in the 19-year-old, having worked with him during his time as Holland head coach.

His future appeared to be in doubt when he was farmed out on loan again last term to PSV Eindhoven in his homeland, following a season with Blackburn Rovers.

However, the Blues insider revealed his performances in a PSV shirt impressed his parent club and he has a strong chance of making it into manager Manuel Pellegrini’s first-team for the 2014-15 campaign.

Rekik has two years remaining on his contract at City. His stock has never been higher, after breaking into van Gaal’s Netherlands squad and earning his first cap earlier on this year.

In light of the departure of experienced centre-half Joleon Lescott, City plan to promote him from within and give him a chance despite interest from several suitors.

United are in urgent need of central defenders after losing Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic on free transfers earlier on in the summer.
