Football Express News understands that Manchester United and Real Madrid are in talks over a potential move that would see Raphael Varane swap Spain for England.
The young French defender was in superb form for his country during the World Cup in Brazil and was named amongst the nominees for the Young Player of the tournament and his quality has seen two of Europe’s biggest clubs show interest this summer.
Ligue 1 champions Paris Saint Germain are interested, whilst Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal is also a keen admirer.
Varane initially made the breakthrough at Madrid under the guidance of now Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho but the youngster found playing time hard to come by last season under new boss Carlo Ancelotti.
Madrid have given no signs of wanting to sell the French defender but United remain hopeful that they can lure him to the Premier League.
Chelsea have also shown interest with Blues boss Mourinho wanting to strengthen his centre-back options, but other signings this summer have now seen a potential move to Stamford Bridge ruled out.
Talks have begun between United and Madrid, but a lot will depend on the future of Portuguese defender Pepe, who in recent weeks has been linked with a move to Monaco.
