United target tells Serie A club he will quit

Manchester United target Alessio Cerci has told Torino he wants to quit the club this summer, according to fresh reports in the Italian media.

Il Messaggero claims the 26-year-old is determined to leave in the coming weeks and has made it clear to officials that he will not put pen to paper on a new contract extension.

He could attempt to force the issue by handing in a transfer request unless the Serie A outfit buckle to his demands and set up a transfer soon.

The report reveals that Roma have stepped up their pursuit of the player and are preparing a £12million offer, which is significantly lower than Torino’s valuation in light of his displays for Italy during the World Cup.

A source close to Old Trafford told Football Express News they are still monitoring the situation with interest and could yet firm up their early enquiries with a formal bid.

However, Roma can offer him Champions League football and there is an acceptance in the corridors of power at United that some targets will slip through the net if they have the chance to play in Europe’s leading club competition.

Elsewhere, AC Milan are also keen but cannot make a bid until they find buyers for outcasts Robinho, Alessandro Matri and M’Baye Niang.

Cerci has less than 12 months remaining on his current contract.
