Ex-United coach tips van Gaal to make enemies

Former Manchester United coach Rene Meulensteen has warned that some Red Devils players could have a problem with new boss Louis van Gaal’s abrasive style.

The Dutchman arrived in the North-West today to officially begin his duties after completing his World Cup assignment with the Netherlands.

His no-nonsense man-management methods have split opinion among many of his former employers and compatriot Meulensteen admits history could repeat itself at Old Trafford.

He told Sky Sports News: “He has got his own management style which has thrown up a few difficulties along the way wherever he has been because of the way that he is.

“He puts himself in front of players – sometimes they accept it, sometimes they don’t. If you don’t accept it then you will probably have a problem.”

Ex-Fulham manager Meulensteen also urged supporters to give the new man time to make his mark as he looks to rebuild confidence following last season’s struggles under David Moyes, who was sacked in April.

He added: “They had Sir Alex Ferguson for so long but then they had a disastrous season under David Moyes. Now another one has come in and it will take time.

“At this moment in time United are still seen by opponents as a team that can be beaten, unless proven otherwise.”
