Newcastle close in on former Arsenal target

Daryl Janmaat

Feyenoord centre-back Daryl Janmaat is set to be the fifth new player to join Alan Pardew at Newcastle and the Dutchman is due to undertake his medical in Tyneside within the next 24 hours.

Newcastle are believed to be on the verge of confirming a deal with Dutch Erdivisie side Feyenoord, with a fee in the region of £5M expected to be announced shortly.

Janmaat, 24, was previously a target for Arsenal and the north Londoners missed out on their opportunity to sign the defender earlier in the year for the bargain price of £5M.

Magpies boss Pardew is rebuilding his side following a turbulent 2013/2014 Premier League campaign blitzed with hefty defeats such as 4-0 and 3-0 losses to Southampton, Tottenham, Sunderland, Everton and Manchester United.

Under Pardew last season the north-east club battled to finish in the top half of the table and managed so seize tenth place just ahead of Tony Pulis’ Crystal Palace, who spent the first half of the season battling relegation.

The Magpies’ closure in tenth was a vast improvement on the season before – they scraped a 16th place finish just five points above relegation victims Wigan Athletic.

Pardew has already completed the signings of midfielders Remy Cabella, Siem de Jong, Jack Colback and forward Ayoze Perez and is believed not to be finished yet with his summer shopping spree.
