Liverpool target set to snub Reds for Roma

As previously reported by FEN, Bayern Munich midfielder Xherdan Shaqiri is strongly linked with a move to Liverpool with discussions having taken place last month between the player’s agent and the Merseyside club.

No agreement has since materialised as it is believed that Brendan Rodgers’ Reds stalled in their pursuit of the young Swiss international amidst their hot pursuit of ex-Barcelona playmaker Alexis Sanchez, who they lost out to Arsenal last week.

But should the Reds’ interest in Shaqiri be reignited they will need to act fast, since reports have emerged in Italy to suggest Italian side Roma are closing in on a deal this week.

The Serie A outfit are in discussions with Shaqiri’s agent and are believed to be preparing an offer similar to that previously proposed by Liverpool – in the region of £16M – and should the bid for the youngster be activated it could spark a bidding war between the Italians and the Premier League runners-up.

Although Bayern Munich are keen to keep their 22-year-old winger, a move to Italy or England is likely as the player has struggled to fit in under first team coach Pep Guardiola, with attacking aces Arjen Robben and Frank Ribery considerably more in the Spaniard’s favour.
