Manchester United target Stefan de Vrij has reportedly told Feyenoord he is desperate to quit the club.

According to Italian source Tutto Mercato Web, the Holland international does not want to extend his stay beyond the summer transfer window and has informed the Dutch outfit of his desire to move on.

Serie A outfit Lazio have been leading the race to secure his signature since the end of May but have struggled to get a deal over the finishing line, handing United fresh hope of landing the centre-half.

A source close to Old Trafford told Football Express News that new boss Louis van Gaal, who picked the 22-year-old for his Netherlands side during their run to the World Cup semi-finals, is keen to work with him at club level.

The Red Devils’ transfer activity will intensify in the coming weeks now their manager has officially completed his international duties, having overseen Saturday’s 3-0 win against host nation Brazil in the third-place play-off.

Feyenoord are said to be holding out for a fee of around £9.5million for de Vrij, but Lazio are reluctant to go above £5m with add-ons.

Previously positive talks are close to a stalemate, which could present United with the opportunity to jump to the front of the queue.
