Germany win the World Cup

Germany won the World Cup after beating Argentina 1-0 after extra-time thanks to a goal from Mario Gotze.

It was the South Americans who started well and could have been ahead after just four minutes had Gonzalo Higuain not sent his clear chance wide of the goal.

Moments later and the Napoli striker would be involved again as he sent a cross over the box but no Argentine player was able to get on the end.

Germany slowly grew into the game and had a more cautious approach, compared to that of their 7-1 win over Brazil in the semi-final.

Lionel Messi would then have a good chance moments before half-time but Jerome Boateng was on hand to deny the Argentina captain.

Kroos then had Germany’s best chance of the first half but his effort would fail to test Sergio Romero in the Argentine goal.

The second half would be a similar affair with both side’s cautious in approach, but the best chance for Germany fell to Andre Schurrle, who sent a fizzing volley goal bound only for Romero to parry his effort away.

Down the other end as the game entered extra time, Rodrigo Palacio came close as he broke free in the box but he failed to direct his chip goal wards.

The winning goal came with seven minutes remaining on the clock as Mario Gotze got time and space in the box, before firing his half volley past Romero.
