West Ham chairman tells fan to ‘wake up’ in London row

West Ham United co-chairman David Gold has hit back at fans for abusing him and told one to “wake up” after he warned that the club’s re-designed badge will probably not mention London.

The veteran businessman announced that the capital is only going to be included on the crest if supporters think it will lure better players to Upton Park.

He has had to contend with abuse from a number of followers on social media site Twitter after making the revelation, with many accusing him and the board of abandoning tradition.

Gold, who shares his duties with fellow entrepreneur David Sullivan, said: “Change makes some people feel uncomfortable, but I think that the new crest will benefit the club hugely in the future.

“London will only go on our badge if the majority of fans support the idea and believe that it will help bring better players to our club.”

One West Ham fan accused Gold of only acting in the interests of himself, Sullivan and vice-chairman Karen Brady, to which he replied: “We are all in this together, wake up.”

Another supporter told the 77-year-old that he was going back on his word.

But Gold stood his ground, saying: “You can question my judgement but not my integrity. My word is my bond.”
