Goals from Robin van Persie and Daley Blind saw Netherlands win the World Cup third place play-off 2-0 on Saturday night.

Humiliation was the word most used following Brazil’s defeat to Germany in the semi-finals last week so the host nation hoped to come into the third place play-off and secure at least some sort of response.

Facing the Dutch, who lost on penalties to Argentina, Brazil would start slowly and another defensive error – this time from Thiago Silva saw Arjen Robben win a penalty for the European side.

Robin van Persie stepped up to score from the resulting spot kick and once again send the home fans into complete silence.

Moments later and Brazil would again be embarrassed at the back when David Luiz headed the ball back into his area, resulting in the young Daley Blind to take one touch and volley past Julio Cesar.

Georginio Wijnaldum would then add a third in the second half to give the Dutch a third place finish, whilst Brazil must now go back to the drawing board.
